Site : Truguet military barracks, Pl. Armand Vallée, 83000
The rehabilitation of the barracks into a third-place aims to explore the concept of the in-between— transitional spaces that offer a moment of pause and improve spatial readability. This concept creates both separation and continuity between activities. The Truguet military barracks are located in a buffer zone between the medieval city center and the peri-urban area of Toulon. Today, this site serves as a passageway between these two zones— an in-between space.
We chose to develop our project around the concept of the in-between — those transitional, intermediate moments that represent a “blank,” a pause, a breath. These transitional spaces serve to define both the places they separate and those they connect; they must simultaneously create an interruption of movement and ensure continuity. Thus, we have envisioned two galleries on either side of the casemates, serving as transitions. These galleries enhance the readability of the spaces with distinct atmospheres and come to life within the in-between. The served spaces represent the event areas of the cultural center, part of the third place concept, and include: an exhibition hall, a library, an amphitheater and a restaurant.
